About Professional Services Review

Professional Services Review (PSR) is an Agency within the Health and Aged Care portfolio. Its work protects the integrity of Medicare, child dental benefits, and the pharmaceutical benefits programs (PBS). PSR is established under Part VAA of the Health Insurance Act 1973 and is committed to reviewing and investigating cases referred from Medicare.

Role Overview

The Paralegal provides essential support as part of the Case Management Unit. Reporting to the Special Counsel, the Paralegal assists in managing the caseload of the Director and Associate Directors. You will work closely with PSR’s in-house legal team, offering guidance on procedural, legislative, and regulatory matters while ensuring high-quality document and record management.

You will set your own work priorities, ensuring accuracy and timeliness while working in a collaborative, small team environment.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assist with cases at the Director or Associate Director’s review stage and support the Case Management Unit.
  • Provide legal and administrative support including drafting decisions in line with PSR’s statutory framework and principles of administrative law.
  • Draft correspondence for internal and external stakeholders, including the Chief Executive Medicare, PSR panel members, practitioners, and legal representatives.
  • Manage electronic records and update case flow reports.
  • Communicate with practitioners, lawyers, medical consultants, and PSR panel members.
  • Conduct legal research and assist with managing external consultant processes, including contract drafting and monitoring spending approvals.
  • Assist with Freedom of Information (FOI) requests, privacy and governance matters, and advise on the PGPA Act as required.
  • Support the outsourcing of legal services in litigation matters by drafting spending approvals, managing files, and assisting with hearings under supervision.
